Lamphere Schools - Getting Ready for Kindergarten

We're looking forward to meeting you.

Getting Ready for Kindergarten

Starting kindergarten is a big step - and an exciting rite of passage for young children and their parents. You love your child and want him/her to get off to a good start in school

Transition to kindergarten is a journey, but there is a lot you can do to prime your child for the trip. Kindergarten readiness involves four areas of development: intellectual, physical, social-emotional, and self-care.

Download our checklist Lamphere Schools - Getting Ready for Kindergarten  to see how well your child is doing in acquiring the skills needed for success in kindergarten. Most children entering kindergarten can perform the tasks listed at least sometimes. Your child's development may be a little faster or slower in certain areas. Have patience, trust your judgement and don't be overly critical. A few suggestions are offered with each skill to help you foster these skills with your child.

Raising an eager learner is the goal and it can be achieved easily through play, spending time with your child and day-to-day activities.

Junior Kindergarten

Junior Kindergarten will provide advantages and alternatives for our eligible Kindergarten age students.  “This program is designed for students who would benefit from a two year kindergarten experience,” said Jane Jurvis, Lamphere’s Director of Curriculum and Instruction.  “The curriculum is a play-based, learn-by-doing approach, involving more active learning than the traditional kindergarten program, allowing students the ‘gift of time’ to enhance their social, self-monitoring, fine motor and academic skills.” The program is a full day schedule and will follow the same school calendar as all other Lamphere schools.

Students who meet the state’s entry eligibility standards with a birthday on or before September 1 are eligible. Students who have a birthday between September 1 and December 1 of the same school year may also enroll with a parent-signed waiver.

Traditional Kindergarten

Lamphere's Kindergarten program is an all day, 5 days a week program offered at all four of our elementary schools.  Our young learners are immersed in a full academic curriculum along with arts, music, physical and world cultures.

A child may be enrolled in Kindergarten if they are five years old on September 1 in the school year of enrollment. Parents of children who will turn five years old between September 2 and December 1 must complete the Kindergarten Age Waiver form in order for their child to enroll in Kindergarten for the upcoming school year.
