Back to School Information

August 12, 2020

Dear Lamphere Families,

For the past few months the Lamphere Back to School Task force has been planning for both virtual and in-person options for the upcoming school year.  After great care and thoughtful consideration, we have determined that the best course of action is to utilize the remote learning component of our Return to School Roadmap for the start of the 2020-21 school year.  The Lamphere Board of Education approved this plan during their meeting last night.

There are certainly compelling reasons to offer an in-person option all of which we agree are of great importance for our students.  However, due to the high likelihood of on-going, intermittent disruptions and closures, as well as the health and safety of all involved, we feel it best to not provide in-person learning for our students throughout the first quarter (August 31- October 30). We have witnessed other areas of the nation attempt to begin in-person instruction with mixed results.  Also, we are seeing major professional and college programs struggling to maintain the safety of their students and players despite having vast resources.

At this time, we are offering two options to our families: Remote Learning and Lamphere Virtual.  For both options, attendance will be taken and grades will be given.

Remote Learning

A structured, full, daily schedule for students, Junior Kdg - Grade 12.

  • Lamphere teachers will be holding class and providing live teaching every day to students, during regular school hours.
  • Students in grades Junior K - 5 and Lamphere Center will use Google Classroom with their teachers throughout the first quarter.
  •  Students in grades 6-12 will use Canvas as their learning management system with their teachers throughout the first quarter.
  • All teachers will provide both large and small group instruction daily.
  • Students will receive assignments, be expected to turn them in, be assessed and receive grades for their work.
  • Students with Individualized Education Plans (IEP) will receive Special Education services and progress monitoring towards their IEP goals.

Lamphere Virtual Option

Students K-12 will be enrolled in Edmentum, a fully accredited, self-paced virtual offering.

  • This option can be accessed at any time to fit families’ schedules and will have very limited interaction between Lamphere teachers and students.
  •  Please note the only elective that will be offered through Lamphere Schools’ teachers will be instrumental music. Other electives will be offered 6-12 through Edmentum.

  •  If your child attends Lamphere Center or has an IEP, please indicate this when you sign-up. You will be contacted by a member of the special education department to discuss next steps.  Please contact your child’s building administrator or Stephanie Siems if you have any questions.

What’s Next

At this time we will schedule ALL students into Remote Learning, placing them in their home schools with Lamphere teachers from their school instructing in a remote environment using Google Classroom or Canvas.  Students who wish to sign-up for the Lamphere Virtual please complete the Lamphere Virtual (Edmentum) Opt-in form by Monday, August 17.

  • Please note that you will be receiving additional information next week about:
  •  Elementary and Secondary Daily Schedules
  •  Lamphere Center Daily Schedules
  •  Support Service Schedules
  •  Student Class Assignments (K-5) Student Schedules (Grades 6-12) Student Expectations and Netiquette
  •  Technology and Materials Distribution
  •  Canvas and Google Classroom Information including how to log in
  •  Food Program
  •  Decision about fall athletics and activities
  •  Preschool and Childcare

We anticipate that this decision will be met with a range of reactions, from frustration to praise from our community. We understand this and have agonized over these decisions. Although as a community we face complex and public health uncertainties, please know that Lamphere Schools offers our assurance that we are prepared to deliver the highest quality remote and virtual experience possible for our students given this extraordinary situation.

We will continue to closely monitor the learning environment and revisit our plans for a safe return at the end of October. We will continue to work closely with you, as you have truly demonstrated, you are our partners in education.

We appreciate your positive support and are looking forward to the day when we can welcome our students physically back into the classrooms.  Until that time, we sincerely thank you for your patience and understanding.

Please feel free to contact your building administrator if you have specific questions or concerns regarding this plan.

Sincerely,

Dale Steen, Patrick Dillon, Greg Fuller & Jane Jurvis
