Students riding bikes

Students biking or walking to school, are encouraged to utilize the crosswalk at 12 Mile and Edward Street. At this crossing site, the city provides crossing guards present to ensure the safety of students. Other crosswalks do not have crossing guards to assist.

As a walker or bike rider, it is important to remember to:

  • Always use designated crosswalks and obey traffic signals when crossing streets or traveling through parking lots.

  • Walk/Ride on the sidewalks, not on the road, and always face traffic if no sidewalks are available.

  • Avoid using electronic devices while walking/biking to maintain awareness of your surroundings.

  • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street.

  • Walk with a classmate when possible, especially in less-traveled areas.

  • Establish a specific route and a set time to arrive at school when walking/biking alone.

  • Dress appropriately for adverse weather conditions and ensure visibility, especially in the dark.
